Elise, 54: “"Because I can't afford to own a horse, I ride other people's horses and feel an obligation to ride them correctly. I fear I may ruin their way of going.”
She’s heard a lot of negative comments from trainers and barn owners over the years. Things like, "You are wasting your money on lessons because you can't ride," and "You'll never get your bronze medal."
She’s consistently proved them wrong by earning silver and bronze medals in national competitions. But still, the comments cut deep.
“I know hearing all this s#%* put a seed of doubt in my mind about my riding, but my achievements prove otherwise. And I'm told the horses I ride really like me. I'm hoping to put this fear to rest the longer I ride Lakota. Deep in my heart I know I could never ruin a horse, but hearing what others have said hurt, a lot.
“So that is one of my fears I hope to overcome.”
